Strokebreakers: Making a Difference
When I was in elementary school, I had the opportunity to be a part of one of the first groups of Strokebreakers! Along with a few other students, I was selected to be involved in this wonderful therapeutic program geared towards helping stroke victims regain some of their lost functional mobilities. This experience was invaluable for me. It helped me develop a lot of important skills I still use today and inspired me to seek a career in healthcare!

Strokebreakers program pairs students with recovering stroke victims
Students learn emotional and physical therapy firsthand
Twenty grade 8 students from The Valleys Senior Public School in Mississauga are helping stroke victims in their community recover physically and emotionally. Strokebreakers spend an hour and a half in the pool with stroke victims each week at the Terry Fox Community Centre.
The program, established 10 years ago between the school and the centre, allows stroke victims to regain some mobility in a safe, welcoming environment. "The success of Strokebreakers over the years can be attributed to the enduring dedication and compassion of our students and the staff at the Terry Fox Community Centre who recognize a need for community assistance," says Gail Dumaresque, counsellor at The Valleys. "The lifelong friendships that develop as a result of this program are a testament to its success."
"The one-on-one contact with the stroke victims gives students a new perspective on life," says Terri Dale, student and program co-ordinator at The Valleys. "The stroke victims take a real interest in the student volunteers. Their interaction teaches and touches both groups."
Student volunteers are chosen through the school and go through a two-hour training session. Upon completion, they are paired up with an adult stroke victim.
The students assist their partners in the pool Thursday mornings from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The program runs from April to June and from September to December.

P is for Persimmons!:)
Vitamin C assists in the formation of collagen. Collagen is abundant in the connective tissue of cartilage and bone — in fact, it makes up about 30% of our bones, serving as a support structure for mineral deposits and giving bone its resilience. In addition to its role in collagen formation, vitamin C appears to stimulate the cells that build bone, enhance calcium absorption, and enhance vitamin D’s effect on bone metabolism.
